This week I traveled to Ft. Worth, TX for work! I decided to UBER instead of renting a car. I threw up one of those short “hope prayers” … you know, the ones that aren’t “let me stop and intentionally pray for something,” but rather a quick, “Lord, let it be a driver I can converse with or someone fun!” It’s a 45 minute drive! … He answered.
So I must share the story with you all! Mostly because in that 45 minutes I remembered just how it felt to find a person of peace!
What is a “PERSON OF PEACE?” … sounds like some new age, safe space concept or at best a new Star Wars reference. It’s actually Biblical, and we’ll talk about it more at The Well. A Person of Peace is referenced in Luke 10:6 with multiple examples throughout Acts. It is a person sovereignly prepared by God to receive the Gospel, before you arrive. Their heart is ready to hear what you have to say, and God has prepared them to receive it. It’s all God! He has primed the heart of the person to literally soak up and receive the good news you have! It’s a ripe harvest so to speak with no sowing on your part… and let me tell you, when it happens your heart just soars!
Her name is Juanita. I learned about her family, her retired nurse status, and her medical patent currently pending mass distribution (I know, right? Are you impressed yet, because I was). This led of course to what I do; (I’ll admit this is easier for me because I work in Christian events… kind of swings the door WIDE OPEN for transparency there), but it’s always nice to add, “I spend my time working and meeting with women to help them learn to read the Bible… and I love that!” … Well, Juanita LOVED this… and of course she also went to Bible College for three years and desires one day to start a community wide Bible study. (I love this lady). I shared with her, and she shared with me… but we both agreed; We must equip our fellow believers to read the Word of God for themselves, learn to discern the voice of God in their lives, and equip them with tools to help others do the same. (Sound familiar?… we must “make disciples that make disciples!”) I shared with her our process of using Bible Reading Groups, simple and most importantly duplicable. That every person within a Bible Reading Group is either learning to read scripture on their own every day or learning how to lead others to do so. She wanted to know more and became very excited about the prospect of employing this method at the community level! I felt so energized! Imagine if her community group did begin multiplying Bible Reading Groups?! Imagine if men/ women of God could confidently read scripture, interact with it, and show others how to do the same over and over again! Jaunita was truly a person of peace. She already had the Gospel, but her heart was ready to hear perhaps a way of Kingdom building she’d never thought of before, and she received my words with enthusiasm… I was equally built up by her excitement and her encouragement of me… of ALL of us here at The Well.
There was perhaps nothing that weekend more important than that conversation that took place in an UBER en route to Ft. Worth! So take a moment this week and pray for a person of peace in your own life and place yourself in situations where you might meet them. Pray for eyes to spot them and wisdom to approach with the message the Lord has for them. It could be the Gospel itself… it could be a believer that is searching for help, help to read scripture, to pray, you name it. The good news is we know they’re out there… now, let’s get to looking!

• The principle is well illustrated by the conversion of Cornelius (The Centurion) in Acts 10.
